Owens Educational Services, Inc. > Victim Empathy
There are three components to the Victim Empathy Program: two different educational classes and one mediation. Juvenile offenders, their parents, and casemanagers can decide which option best suits the needs of the youth. Classes are held Mondays 4PM-6PM, and August 14 to September 18th Thursdays from 4PM-6PM.
Level One: 3-Week Class
This class is geared toward first-time offenders (shoplifters, property damage, MIP, etc) and includes 2 hours of community service, a local merchant guest-speaker, and the creation of an apology letter. The cost of the class is $75, with a sliding-fee scale available.
Level Two: 6-Week Class
This class is geared toward youth involved in more serious offenses (assault, gang involvement, theft, etc.) or those with multiple minor crimes and includes 2 hours of community service, the creation of an apology letter, several guest speakers, and a victim-impact panel. The cost of this class is $150, with a sliding-fee scale available.
Victim Offender Meeting
A victim Offender Meeting is an opportunity for youth and victims who are willing to engage in a dialogue about the crime. the supervised dialogue will give the victim the opportunity to talk about the impact of the crime on his/her lift, and will give the youth the opportunity to apologize for his/her actions. Both will work together to develop a plan to repair the harm caused by the crime.
For class enrollment: 552-7400
For victim offender mediation enrollment: 345-1131
This program is a collaboration with the Concord Center, Heartland Family Service, and Owens Educational Services, Inc.
